Coaches' Corner
Youth
football coaches meeting 2011 Season.
A.
Great Program for the kids,
community and league supporters.
B.
Feeder for the school football
program
C.
Visibility,
always understand you are a reflection of the league.
1. Notifications:
Website: www.wyfootball.org, will list information for the season including scores, ranking, schedules, pictures, dates of events. The Banner across the top will list practice and game condition information. (Please use good judgment when practicing in wet weather, remember it’s a privilege for us to use the fields).
2. Rules: for fields
- You can only use the city park and school property behind the Old Middle School for practice. (Visibility and insurance).
- There is NO SMOKING on school property
- NO pets/animals on school property
- No practice on cement or parking lots.
- Clean up after yourself at all times. Regardless of who’s it is.
- Watch out for soccer players, and stay off soccer fields. If it’s empty you may use it, but if a team shows up ask them if you need to move. Don’t make them ask you, because they want. They will call the city…
- Game field rules: No food or sun flowers on field.
No suger juice only WATER….
Parents only on home side of field.
3. Players:
- Strips for weight, don’t remove them and if it comes off you need to replace.
- Watch language and fighting/sportsmanship at all times with you and players. It’s not optional; it’s our responsibility to control it.
- Practice times; No threats to kids for late arrival or punishment. Talk to parents…open lines of communications. Explain the league rules up front and everyone should better understand. (% of time for practice/game time playing time.)
- Remind parents about paper work: i.e. BC, physicals all due 14 Sept or they don’t play in first game...
4. Coaches:
- Watch your actions. I.e. lang, arguing and treatment of players. They are kids….
- Arguing with the referee’s, not an option past the point of abuse.
- Referee; explain penalties and describe actions.
- Leave the line judges alone they are volunteers.
- If you don’t understand the rules read them. (Explain Me)
- Gear issue: all gear turned in the last game….
- Coaches: if you can’t give 90% of your time to the team maybe it’s not meant for you to be the Head Coach/ Assistant Coach.
5.
Team
-
Must have a team meeting before 1st
Practice.
-
Team parties or the coaches’
responsibility. (Assign a team Mom to set it up for you and put it together).
-
If you fundraise or ask for money
it’s on YOU not the league.
-
You can’t ask parents for more
money unless they all agree…
-
Go over league rules and policies.
-
Review league dates and events.
-
Any letter or memo you give out to
parents that is assumed to come from the league, needs to be approved by the
board. If you choose to send it out yourself, then you are responsible for the
content.
6.
Bylaws and rules:
-
Read them and understand. A few
different rules per age group.
(Example:
field goals/extra points, ball above the head) If you see issues or problems
with the bylaws, please let the board know.
-
Schedules and game times. Due to the
size of the league, we need to push games along as fast as possible. Please have
your team ready and waiting 30 minutes before each game.
I understand that this is time consuming, but it’s necessary to move
games along as quickly as possible.
-
(Change) If you draft a player that
has a sibling, you are required to draft the other. Unless parents ask to
separate.
-
Due to team schedule and not
everyone having the same amount of games, your record for the playoffs is based
on your record the first time you play a team.
7.
Camp:
-
All coaches are required to attend.
-
Scouting is allowed, but remember,
it’s not the priority. Every team will get a spread sheet with everyone’s
scores and times. So all you need is player’s name.
-
Keep the kids busy and focused as
much as possible. WATER breaks will be enforced by the league….
League
priority:
A. It is the coach’s responsibility to ensure they pass information
along to the parents. We will list everything we can on the web site and through
emails, but in the end it’s your ability to relay information and keep
communications lines open with the parents that we rely on. They are the lively
hood of our program.
B. No arguing in-front of kids and parents of the league.
C. Everyone needs to sign the coaches conduct form today.
D. All coaches regardless will have their NAYS certification completed
before the first game or won't be allowed to coach.
E. Finally No league bashing – If you don’t have anything good to say
then you can always step aside and let someone else replace you. If you would
like to discuss issues/problems or suggestions please find me. We are always
looking to make things better. But also, we understand we can’t always make
everyone happy. Remember it’s about the kids/league NOT YOU...
Let’s have a great season and teach these kids some great Football, Cheerleading and sportsmanship that they deserve.
Thanks,
WYFL Board
